• Supporting children with SEND
• Parental engagement and advocacy
"In my time at Pen Green I have been a parent, family worker and middle leader. I am now part of the Centre Leadership Team where I lead on SEND and parental engagement. I recently successfully completed my National Professional Qualification in Integrated Centre Leadership (NPQICL).
As the SENCo I support all of the staff with SEND matters and lead on the work with children. I am an advocate for these children in the nursery and ensure that children with SEND are identified and supported to make good progress. I work with outside agencies to develop a team around the family and have worked closely with schools to help these children with a smooth transition. I have participated in the High Needs Panel in the County and have been involved in starting up an inclusive group for children with special rights called Let’s Play Together which I co-lead on a weekly basis. During summer holidays I organise a playscheme for children with special rights (4-11 years) and have undertaken training in manual handling and epilepsy awareness to support these children. I have also written a successful bid for funding to buy specialist equipment for the children. Recently, I have undertaken Makaton Training and have embedding this early communication tool within the centre. I am also the named person for behaviour management and for Looked After Children (LAC).
I am a Parental Engagement Champion, leading a team of practitioners who run groups to support parents to be effective advocates for their children. I understand and believe that parental engagement improves life chances for children and achieves better outcomes. Many parents have gained accreditation and have gone on to become workers within the early years field. I have been involved in facilitating parental engagement workshops and disseminating information at conferences and specific training both in-house and externally."
